How to Handle Lat Strains in Pitchers

πŸ”₯ Everything You Need To Know About Lat Strains

Teres Major is oftentimes injured in conjunction with the Lat due to similar role and proximity

The Injury occurs at the acceleration out of Max ER when the Lat is most lengthened then forcefully contracts

Most injuries happen where the muscle transitions to tendon or where the tendon attaches to bone (Up near arm pit/shoulder)

Return to pitching timeframes vary widely based on the grade of the injury (~62-172 days depending on the literature you are looking at)

Most Lat Strains do not require surgery, however, Gr 3 injuries and Avulsions are often candidates for it

Our Anecdotal Thoughts:

-We have seen high % of these guys being guys that have large amounts of Glove side sidebend which places even more tension/stretch on the Throwing Lat

-Crush Collagen. The research isn’t the clearest on this and you can find evidence on both sides. With that being said, one specific athlete was adamant on taking it (probably too much) in the rehab process and he bounced back at a much faster rate. Tried this with following Lat Strains and continued to see above average improvements in most (not all) cases

-DO NOT rush these back or they with very likely have a setback or have a tough time getting back to their baseline velo
